Your engine is one of, if not the most important major component of your car. Without it working in good order, it's impossible for you to go anywhere. If it runs inefficiently, you may face a whole host of problems that can be avoided with relatively simple maintenance. At John's Automotive Service we provide all of the expertise and parts needed to keep your engine running happily and at peak efficiency.
One of the simplest ways to determine the condition of your engine is to examine the oil that drains out during an oil change. The oil circulates through much of your engine, so it's a great way to determine the overall health of your car's power plant. Ideally, we want your oil to be darker than when it went in with uniform viscosity and no solid particles. Solid particles are a major concern because they mean that something inside the engine, be it a seal or anything else, is breaking apart. Engines contain a lot of finely balanced mechanisms with only a few micrometers of space for moving parts to clear each other. Any solid particles moving through your engine can cause a massive amount of damage very quickly. At John's Automotive Service we perform expert analysis on your oil to make sure that everything is working perfectly within your engine's internals, and we carry the best oils to replace that fluid in your vehicle.
Another simple item that can save your engine untold misery, is the coolant fluid, which keeps everything running at the correct temperature. The many moving parts inside your engine, as well as the explosions taking place within its combustion chambers, generate a significant amount of heat. As with any machine, your engine has temperature tolerances at which it happily operates. Once those tolerances are exceeded, things can start to go wrong. A common side effect of overheating can be radiator failure. The water that cools the engine becomes heated and pressurizes the radiator past a safe level causing the scalding water to spray out. This dangerous problem can be avoided with the engine coolants used by John's Automotive Service.
To work efficiently, your car's engine needs the ingredients for combustion to be delivered in the purest form possible. To this end your engine contains a number of filters which keep everything nice and clean. John's Automotive Service's engine thorough maintenance keeps checks on your air, oil, and fuel filters, replacing them as needed to keep your car running at its highest efficiency.
Fuel Injector Cleaning
Working alongside your spark plugs are the injectors that shoot a precise amount of fuel into the combustion chamber. Over time these injectors can become clogged with contaminants from fuel. John's Automotive Service carries a line of specially developed injector cleaning solutions which open the injector tubing back up and get your car back to making the most power that it can.
Engine accessories such as the alternator and air conditioning compressor rely on belts that take power from the engine to run them. Over time, these belts can become frayed and damaged. If your alternator belt snaps, for example, your engine won't be able to generate the electricity it needs to charge the battery and keep itself running. John's Automotive Service can keep a close eye on the health of your accessory belts and ensure that all your engine's pulleys are lined up perfectly to allow for the maximum amount of use from your belts.
Although diesel engines don't require tune-ups and tend to last longer than gasoline engines, they do require regular maintenance. Typical maintenance tasks include:
You can count on the experts at John's Automotive Service to help your diesel engine last a long time.
Fuel injection is a system for admitting fuel into an engine. Since 1990, fuel injectors have completely replaced carburetors as the primary means of getting gasoline into the engine. A fuel injector atomizes the fuel by forcibly pumping it through a small nozzle (under high pressure). Failure of the fuel injection system means poor performance and ultimately destroys the engine. Make sure your vehicle's fuel injection system is maintained properly. For all your fuel injection maintenance and replacement needs, call 319-396-4206 or visit John's Automotive Service today.
An ignition system is a system for igniting (using an electric spark) a mixture of fuel and air in a gasoline engine. A properly working ignition system means a properly starting engine and high performance from your car. For all your ignition system maintenance and replacement needs, call or visit John's Automotive Service today.
Ignition Wires & Cables
Ignition cables also known as spark plug wires are an important part of your car's ignition system. They transfer the spark from the ignition coil to spark plugs that ignite the mixture of fuel and air. The mixture starts the engine. Over time, ignition wires and cables get weak and break down. This makes it impossible for the spark to reach the engine cylinders. This results in the engine misfiring. The car will eventually fail to start. If it does start, it will run poorly. Common symptoms of faulty ignition cables and wires are: poor gas mileage, engine misfires, engine light is on, and engine may vibrate. If your car needs new ignition cables and wires, call or visit John's Automotive Service in Cedar Rapids, IA 52405. Here, you will have the wires and cables changed by a top-rated mechanic.
A spark plug delivers electric current to the combustion chamber from the ignition system. Spark plugs that haven't been changed for a long time can cause ignition problems. At John's Automotive Service, we have automotive experts who will check and replace your spark plugs. For all your spark plug repair or replacement needs, call 319-396-4206 or visit John's Automotive Service today.
Oil, Lube, and Filter
To keep running smoothly, your car highly relies on oil, lube, and oil filters. Oil helps in lubricating, cooling, and cleaning the internal engine components. With time, motor oil becomes contaminated. Your car needs an oil, lube, and filter change every three months (or 3,000 miles). When it is time for a lube, oil, or filter change, take your vehicle to John's Automotive Service in Cedar Rapids, IA 52405.
Check Engine Light
No one likes to see their car's "Check Engine" light come on. The light could mean a costly problem, like a bad catalytic converter, or it could be something minor, like a loose gas cap. At John's Automotive Service, we can pull the code and diagnose the problem for you. Give us a call at 319-396-4206 or stop by the shop for our expert assistance.

Great people and great service! Would recommend to anyone!
Great place to take your vehicle if you are looking for trust worthy service at a very competitive price. The staff is reliable, honest, prompt, and most importantly, knowledgeable. I have serviced my car here several times now and will continue to come back in the future because of their quality service and friendly atmosphere.
As usual, the service is excellent, the prices are very good, and the information provided is always right on target. I have never had anyone there try to sell me anything I didn''t need. I have been a customer for a number of years. For as long as I am able to drive, I will always depend on John's Auto Service.
I've been a long time customer. Business as usual. Staff took the time to get an accurate diagnosis without guessing.
I do enjoy the rewards of being a car club member at John's Automotive! I actually left John"s Auto and I didn't have to get my card out to pay the bill. It was all covered by my Car Club membership. It pays to be loyal customer at John"s Automotive. I have received excellent care car!
I've been going to John's Automotive Service for about 5 years and have always been treated with respect. Bob, Al and the team do what repairs are required and do not try to up-sell you on things that are not needed. I do a lot of my own repair work, but I take it to John's when I need added expertise, special tools or just don't want to do it.
The team at John's Automotive are knowledgeable, friendly and trustworthy. They always leave me feeling that they have my best interests at heart. Never fun to spend money on car repairs but it helps when you know you are getting value.
As always, John's Auto provided the quality service I have come to expect from them. They finish on time and in budget. I love the use of their loaner car as well. No upselling of additional services, but they will keep an eye on possible needs in the future.
I absolutely love the people and service at John's Automotive Service. They are friendly, thorough, fair, and honest. They work around my schedule and always help to make sure I'm getting the best deal. They have an outstanding rewards program. I would highly recommend John's to anyone needing anything from minor to major repairs and service.
I can only give John's Automotive five stars for their service. They're knowledgeable, they are patient in explaining what and why I need work on my vehicle. They don't look at me or talk to me like I'm just a female, and not worth their time. They are people friendly, which is also important to me. Last fall they even went above and beyond 'the call of duty'. After they had finished working on my truck, I rode my recumbent trike to their shop to pickup the truck. I had just bought the transport rack and was still learning how to load the trike. They volunteered to help me get the trike loaded. As a matter of fact, one of the mechanics even helped adjust the rack to fit the trike better. Some places would just say ... To bad: it's your problem. Not the personnel at John's ... They wanted to make sure both I and my trike were safe. My father has been gone for years and my brothers and son do not live close. It is really nice to feel secure in the fact that I have mechanics who will give me good advice without taking advantage of me and at the same time, give me qualîty work that they stand behind. Thanks to all personnel at John's Automotive.
